It's been a busy business week in the Town.

The Planning Board addressed seven issues of varying degrees of complexity and attempted to work with the land owners to effect their particular plans. Several people wanted to subdivide their land to create an additional building lot. This requires that each parcel have at least 1.4 acres along with individual road access. In the case of a person wanting to start a home business, this will require a Public Hearing, in which the applicant is required to send out letters of intent to all his neighboring property owners within 500 feet of his property and they, in turn, have the opportunity to sanction or protest this special use in a designated residential area, at a scheduled planning board meeting. The Public Notices section of the Hi-Neighbor is where one finds out about such meetings. They are also posted on an outdoor bulletin board at the Town of Nelson Office building.-- The case of a former horse facility being converted to commercial storage, when in a residential zone, has many ramifications to be dealt with.-- A farm desiring to sell wool products seasonally, needs only a special permit and another for a road sign designating their facility.

The Town has only a few areas that are designated "commercial." These are in the hamlet of Nelson, which is tricky because there are already existing private residences, the business park where Dialectic labs, et al, are located (Yes, this is the Town of Nelson) and the four corners, in Erieville.

Twenty six people attended the covered dish supper put on by the Heritage Society on the 13th. No fast food fillers here. Real down home cooking was the featured fare.----- A few, it's always a special few, people, are doing a lot of work and planning for events leading up to the bicentennial(s) of Madison County, 2006 and Nelson, 2007. Watch for events and try to support them. ----- One thing, in particular, that the group is looking for are old yearbooks from the Erieville School when it had classes for First through Sixth grades. Search your barns or attics or query your older relatives or maybe just say to yourself, "Hey, I've got one of those."

Clean-up day is definitely on for Saturday, April 30, 9a-3p. Also, on that evening is the Erieville Fire Department annual benefit banquet. They will be honoring Carl Anderson for 50 years of service.

The Town Board will be reviewing our Land Use Regulations which were last updated in 2002. The current ones are available for inspection at the Town office Building and may be purchased for the cost of copying which is about $8.00. For just general interest, or most especially if you plan on making changes to your property, either physical, or starting a home business, it would be wise to consult this document first.

The Highway Department will be kept very busy during this spring and summer season repairing damage done to many roads resulting from the heavy rains that fell earlier this month. A request for aid from FEMA, the federal program for flood relief, has been applied for, as the budget did not take in to account the damage that was done. ---The Town Board will do their annual road tour on April 23, which is a requirement for those in that position.

Our condolences to the family of Sonia Davies on the death of her uncle, Ron Hull, who succumbed to injuries received when house explosion due, apparently, to a leak of underground gas that surfaced during a period of high water levels. Also, we keep in mind Ron's wife, Judy, who remains hospitalized with severe burns.
