"Erieville pilots' remains head to Arlington 37 years later."

This is the headline from a story written by Dick Case in the Syracuse Post Standard on February 27, 2005.

It was in November of last year when the Markowski /O'Dell families learned that remains of Ivan O'Dell (brother of Celia Markowski of Erieville and Vernon O'Dell of Georgetown) had been found by hikers on Nisqually Glacier in Rainier National Park in the state of Washington.

Ivan was a pilot in the USAF, having joined in 1942.On April 15, 1968 the plane in which he was riding was on a routine flight from California to MChord AFB in Washington when, as was told to his wife later, an apparent air traffic controller error resulted in Ivan and another pilot, a Col. Crutchfield, crashing into the mountain at 10,000 feet. The wreckage recently discovered was at 6800 feet suggesting that it slid down from the original crash site.

For further insights into this sad, but fascinating incident, and the family of Lt.Col.Ivan O'Dell, refer to the article by Mr. Case and to the Town of Nelson website.

From Sonia: The March ENCA meeting featured guest speaker, Lou Neuburger, who is treasurer of the Tuscarora Lake Association. Lou gave a very informational talk on that group. The TLA was formed in 1981 and presently has about 183 members. Membership is not limited to Lake camp/home owners. Mr. Neuberger, along with Dick Steinbach, is involved in testing and monitoring the quality of the lake water. This is done several times a year. Two meetings for the entire membership are held each year as well as 5 or 6 board meetings. Annual dues are $10.00 per couple. Monies left in the treasury at the end of the year are dispersed throughout the community. Thank you to Lou for an interesting presentation.

It's been awhile since this years' ice fishing derby has taken place but I am still trying to collect details about it. It's really the first year that I have paid attention to this event and this sport and I can't help but be tremendously impressed by what these people do.

From all reports, it was another very successful endeavor. About 257 people registered to join the contest and about $3800.00 was collected, after expenses. According to one of the organizers, Jeff (Wheels) Wheeler, "every dollar goes back to nature." In addition to Jeff, other main players are John Bittel, Rosie Bittel, and Mark Nourse and they should be commended for organizing such a day. I've been asked to say special thanks to Becky Palmer for emceeing the awarding of the day's prizes as well as for promoting the derby on her morning radio show. As you may or may not know, Becky is an Erieville resident and, along with on-air partner Ron, the host of a morning radio show on 104.7 FM.
