September, 2004
A disparate group of citizens met this week to discuss the future of this organization that had its beginning earlier this year. As with any new venture, this one is experiencing some growing pains. Several issues were brought forth. There are some bureaucratic ones like the apparent need to become a recognized, tax exempt entity. This takes time. Fortunately, there are some in the group willing to do this sort of business.
Others of us have more humble interests and that means to just become acquainted and helpful to each other. This extends to both long-time residents and newcomers to the area. We will continue our meetings on the 3rd Monday of the month at the TOB at 7pm.
We have some projects in mind. The first of these is a bulb planting on some sites around the town. To help out, meet us at the Erieville Cemetery at 1pm on Sunday, October 3rd. The daffodil is a traditional Welsh symbol and we have bulbs to spread around.
Plans are afoot to have seven more barns painted with the Madison County logo next year, one from each town. If you know of any barn that would be a good palate for such a painting, submit your suggestion to Chris Westcott at the Town Office Building.
The Town of Nelson Historical display will be featured at the Madison County Historical Society (Cottage Lawn) in Oneida, beginning with a reception at that site on Sunday, September, 26 at 2 pm. The drive between our town and Oneida is gorgeous. Actually, there are many such routes, and to see this output from a few dedicated individuals, concerning the history of where we live is a great destination. And bring the kids for a good history lesson.
Another project of the E-N Heritage Society is that of selecting a “Citizen of the Year” for the Town. Go ahead, make somebody’s day and submit a nomination. Forms can be picked up at the TOB or create your own.
This publication evolved as a project of the ENCA as a vehicle to let folks know that we around here want to promote our town as a specific entity, an area of friendly people who would like to know each other better and do stuff.
There has never (at least in the last 30 years) been much interest shown in the governing body of our town. Voting on issues or people for office is a very narrow affair. We would like to change this and one way to do it is to communicate better with the individuals who live here. We encourage more participation in town affairs.
The Planning board meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month and the Town Board on the 2nd Thursday of each month. The Town Supervisor attends monthly planning meetings at the county level and brings back information from them that affects what goes on in Nelson.
We hope to get to know you better as neighbors and citizens.
