Today is Halloween. The Gazette has been on a little vacation. A couple of people actually missed it. Whatever, there are a few interesting and interested folks about who actually have a particular devotion to this area and attempt in various ways to make it a better community. The bulk of people, however, subscribe to the adage about home being just a place to hang your hat. (Not that many people wear hats anymore.)

Let's see, the Heritage Society took part in the Fall History Weekend by having the display of memorabilia available. They also sponsored an appraisal day.

The Welsh Church closed for the season. This edifice will feature prominently in the upcoming bicentennials for both the County and the Town in 2006 and 2007.

There was a heated discussion at a recent Zoning Board meeting regarding some Town law. Some seasonal residents apparently thought that land owner rights are too restrictive. And they may just be right. The Town law was drafted (at a cost of about $20,000) by a professional company that does this sort of thing, in the early 1990's. With no insult intended to the members who were on the Town Planning Board nor to the Town Board, who voted on it in good faith, it may be time to revisit this (very intrusive) document to see whether it should be simplified.

The Master Plan, which is the document on which Town law is generally based, is in the process of being looked at. What would be really helpful would be for more town residents to take more of an interest in the political activity of the Town Board and Planning Board and the best way to do this would be to attend the monthly meetings which are open to the public. Also, both the Master Plan and the Town Zoning Ordinance are available in hard copy at the Town office. The latter is also available on this website as a PDF file on the usadatanet site only. That would be at: http://home.usadatanet.net/ geoffearl

Both are complex documents and I think that there is very little general awareness of what is contained in either.

Well, enough on controversy and confrontation.

The Erieville-Nelson Community Association, a newish group that started a couple of years ago and whose intention was to clean up the Town a bit and push small businesses, still meets and continues to strive to meet its goals. Our last meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon, at Rosies, and proved to contain a palate of interesting ideas. The situation on the banners was updated. Some of the ones in Nelson blew off their supports and some of the flags were actually lost. The company will reimburse us for product failure, but, it is suspected that banner or two was picked up by some passerby. Ah, the looter phenomenon. Guess it's just where some people get their jollies. Also, our local power company doesn't seem to want to hang these flags, even though other power companies in other Towns do it. So, Nelson has to rely on the spirit of a local tree pruning company to do this, for free. Of course the power company has all kinds of safety rules such that you need grounded ladders to climb their poles. This lets out the possibility of, e.g., the local fire company volunteers to put up the banners. Yes, seemingly small things in this, oh so sophisticated, world, have become so tedious. Liability has become the watch word to any undertaking.

The community website continues to need input, stories, pictures, ideas. http://home.twcny.rr.com/enca
