Volume Number 1 Issue Number 3
October, 2004
Yikes, October is being spirited away. It must be the witches and goblins and ghosts populating the end of this particular month. Sure has been pretty in these parts though. I hope you've all taken time to just look around and take in the crisp, fresh air.
At the Town Board meeting this month were more issues of highway maintenance. That is the largest part of our budget. Some roads were improved. The ever needy wait their turn. One issue that has loomed for many years concerns the subject of refurbishing those town roads which were once only "seasonal" and now have become populated the year round. They take up a lot of the highway budget. Mention was made to have all major new subdivisions (i.e. 5 or more dwellings) help to finance their own road upgrades. Have you noticed that this sweet piece of earth seems to be booming with new construction?
Also, over the next two years there will be a revaluation of property assessments in the town.
The TOB has a new septic system. Tricky to do when you're sitting on a former swamp. It's a raised bed affair. Plans are afoot to blacktop the parking area too. That will be after it is leveled to get rid of the giant puddle that accumulates there now.
Anybody have any ideas about constructing a couple of "Welcome to Nelson" signs at the east and west borders on Route 20?

The E-N Heritage Society display continues in Oneida through December. That's at the Madison County Historical Society, 245 Main St. Stop in weekdays from 10-4. The whole place is such a fine walk back into history and Erieville and Nelson have a room set aside for their collection.
It will soon be time to vote. This year's will be a very important election. The Erieville Methodist Church congregation will continue the tradition of an election night roast pork dinner. These folks can cook! You won't be disappointed by supporting this event. Look for details in the popular press.
Madison Hall in Morrisville will be the site of a Harvest Dinner at 6:30 pm on Nov. 8. This event is the first sponsored by the Agricultural Committee that is an arm of the group organizing the bicentennial celebration of Madison County which occurs in 2006. Foods grown locally will be on the menu which will be prepared by the culinary department of the college. Eight dollars a person includes food and entertainment by Darothy DeAngelo featuring a presentation on the infamous Loomis gang who were early horse thieves in the area. Sounds like fun.
Congratulations to David and Bea Jones on their 65th wedding anniversary.
The Erieville Fire Department is again sponsoring a Halloween party from 6-8 pm on the 31st. There will be treats, a hayride and a petting zoo.
Congratulations are in order for Kay Tainter on being selected as the Town of Nelson "Citizen of the Year." Kay is a gem, a rock and an anchor for the many people who patronize her little country store. Through the years, Kay has met with a lot of adversity, having taken care of her blind mother, saw her husband through a debilitating illness, and this year experiencing the death of her son, Greg. She has continued to run the store even though the gas tanks had to be shut down and the tanks removed at great expense. Still she is ever ready to listen to and empathize with the joys and gripes of all who come in to the store without complaint nor bitterness about her own trials. You will find Kay there most days of the year. (She does close on Christmas.) Kay is a special lady and we're delighted that she has gotten this honor this year.
Best of luck and good wishes go out to Tim Etter on the opening of his photography and frame shop located at The Gallery on Albany Street in Cazenovia. For fine gifts or to enhance that blank wall in your new house this shop is well worth a visit. It's a couple of doors down from Albert's.
The ENCA Garden Club planted about a thousand donated daffodil and narcissi bulbs on the cemetery bank on Tuscarora Road. In the Johnny Appleseed tradition, we'd like to spread that little symbol of the Welsh around the town.
