Mid summer already and what a summer it has been with at least a dozen days over 90 degrees.

The boat parade, lighting of the flares and an array of fireworks made for a festive July 4th celebration.

Erieville was bustling with people last Saturday, here to take advantage of the community wide tag sales. The Heritage Society did well thanks to the many quality donated items that they had to offer for sale. Hot dogs and spiedies and baked goods and drinks could also be found with various groups selling these treats to raise a little money. The best part is the camaraderie and friendships that develop when one takes part in these events.

Coming up next month are two annual BBQs.

On Sunday, August 7th the Erieville Fire Department will have their chicken barbeque at the ball field beginning at noon. Raffle tickets are available for purchase from any of the firemen for a chance to win any of the many donated prizes. Grand prize will be a Kawasaki Prairie 4X4. As an added attraction this year, Sarah Pushlar will arrive with her traveling petting zoo.

On the following Saturday, August 13th, the Erieville Church will host its 26th Annual Beef Barbeque at the church parking lot at 11 a.m. So, plan on eating out locally at least a couple of times next month. Share in the spirit of the neighborhood and support some good causes too.

The new banners are up and look quite charming with their inviting bench under a leafy tree. Thanks, Carol Booth, for all your efforts on this complex and expensive endeavor. Donations are appreciated to keep this project growing. There's a jar at Kay's for the purpose.

Have you gotten to view the new bicentennial barn logos being painted by artist, Scott Hagan? Round and about there is one on the Critz's barn on Route 13, another about a mile north of Route 20 on the Nelson-Fenner Road and also one on Thomas Road at the farm formerly owned by Fay and Marge Lyon.

Speaking of Fay, he is featured in the latest issue of the Route 20 Pulse in his role as Historian for the Town of Nelson. That particular newspaper, in case you're not familiar with it, began one year ago and comes out monthly. It covers the history and heritage of the people and places along Route 20 between Duanesburg and Skaneateles, an area that has just gotten an official designation as a "scenic by-way." The paper is a freebie and available at Kinneys and Eckerds as well as many of the local antique places and restaurants.

The Zoning Board of Appeals looked at seven cases this month. All but one were dispatched in favor of the property owners. That particular case was withdrawn and the applicant went to take his petition to the Town Board. The issue has to do with only one residence being allowed on a property. This is true even though you might own hundreds of acres. In the past, for example, a farmer could have a tenant house for a farm worker or a separate residence for in-laws. The Board will revisit the law and consult with the Town attorney as the request of the applicant did appear to be a most reasonable one and this is a situation that is likely to recur as far flung families tend to come back home to live.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of John Bittel, son of Rosie, who lost his battle with cancer just days ago.

The community website continues to need input, stories, pictures, ideas. Like the Nike ad says, "Just do it."
