The last meting of the ZBA was held on March 30 with a full slate of complex issues to decide. The Town of Nelson has compiled a book of zoning laws that were updated just two years ago, largely to address the special needs of properties in the so-called waterfront zone. Because of the need to protect the lakes, Erieville, and about 2/3 of Eatonbrook that is in the town of Nelson, from pollution and also to address the small lots in these areas, special regulations are needed. A balance must be struck between allowing an owner of property to use it as he sees fit but not infringe on the needs and wants of his neighbors and the environment. Very tricky situations arise. With the ever increasing press of people wanting to build and rebuild and add to and make seasonal camps into year- round residences, the conflicts are many and to handle them fairly requires a profound effort on the part of a lot of people. Our ZBA is to be commended on volunteering to take on this oftentimes thankless job. Let it be said, however, that their decisions are not arbitrary; they need to be very familiar with the intent of the zoning laws.
The Erieville Cemetery Association held their annual meeting on April 4th. Election of officers took place with all the current ones continuing to serve.
The cemetery was incorporated in April of 1876. That makes it 129 years old, this month. It is nonsectarian in nature, so anyone who wishes may chose to be buried here. The grounds are lovely and not only overlook Tuscarora Lake but also a most interesting backwater to the east. It is supported with a couple of modest investments currently in CD accounts in local banks. Interest rates on such being what they are, donations are always appreciated. For inquiries, the group may be contacted at P.O. Box 25, Erieville, NY 13061.
Laurie Carroll has created some charming post cards with an "Erieville" theme. They are available exclusively at Kay's Country Store.
Wildlife sanctuary? Actually it's mid March on Marris Road, with deer, turkeys and crows just hanging out. Have you all noticed the plethora of wildlife that has inhabited our area this passed winter season? There seems to have been more than ever before. It is nice to see and hear the traveler birds back.
Notable dates coming soon:
There was an error in the community website address in last months' Gazette and also on the ENCA calendar. There is no www in it. In addition, to further confuse things, we have an entirely new address.

The old, corrected version, will still work also, at least for awhile.
